Trains and Cream Teas!
Started out with The Walker today with the intention of doing a circular walk of about 6 miles, including a visit to Stogumber Station and the Bee House. The weather was grey but we had a cheery welcome from Jenny and Lydia at the pretty little station tea room. We weren't going to stop here but were told that the Bee House had closed down as a visitors' centre about 8 years ago, so that was a good time for me to have my first cream coffee, sending The Walker on his way! And the scone was excellent, made by Lydia! The station has only been looked after by Jenny for a couple of years but it is popular; it was a pleasure to read about the restoration of the waiting room and to sit in the garden.
Stogumber Station & the 10.48 for Minehead!

Today's walk 17.8 miles : Cumulative 257.8 miles
Leaving Monksilver
A long day but with the ups & downs of the coastal path behind this was, as it turned out, one of the easier days so far. Much warmer today; the first day I can remember that I wasn't being knocked about by the wind but with a big fat grey cloud sitting over the moors there was nothing to shift it! Threatened a downpour all day & there were frequent brief drizzly spells - in the end I gave in & left my light waterproof on!
Also spotted in Stogumber: tiny, attractive & very well-kept cricket ground. Fascinating scoreboard: Batting Team 227-8 after 25 overs; Last Man 374! Will mean nothing to you if you're not interested in cricket but it made me smile.
Highlight of the Day: climb from Crowcombe & then the walk along the ridge of the Quantock Hills - would have been even better without the cloud but this was as good as the best of the Coast walking in Cornwall.
Great Hill, Quantocks
Beer of the Day: 'Exmoor Fox' - a new one to me from the brewers of 'Exmoor Gold'. This is slightly darker & more strongly-flavoured than the 'Gold' but has the same smoothness - good!
Tomorrow's weather forecast is horrible but I could do with pressing on to earn a few days in hand - planning to do a few touristy things around Glastonbury, Cheddar & Bristol.
Thanks to Jenny & Lydia for your kind donation
Terry & Pauline: good to hear from you & glad that you're settling in. The train's for you - Les took the photo at Stogumber, I was already down the trail....!
Maggie: Hi Maggie, I think we met once, about 40 years ago! Pleased you're enjoying the Blog - it'll be good to hear about your latest exploits on the south-west path, that'll bring back memories for me.
Temple of Harmony, Goathurst
.... in harmony with everything by the time I reached Goathurst!
BBC Breakfast Weather are at Land's End this morning. (I'm guessing they went there to film you, but arrived too late!) They said that John O'Groats is only 874 miles away (I think you are going round the long way...)

ReplyDeleteNearly under 1000 miles to go - that's 20% done already! Keep it up. And the first thing Joe, my five year old, said when I came in tonight - "Can we look at the Bernie map?" Must be your youngest follower! Trevor
