Day 10 - Trethevey to Crackington Haven

A bright and very breezy morning. The walker overslept until 7am but I sent him on his way just after 9. I had been tackling the washing since 8 and decided that I ought to call my day 'Close Encounters with Laundry Machines' or maybe just give tips to campers needing to do laundry. I am actually quite experienced at this task having camped with the family for years, but all the machines are different to operate, take various amounts of money and length of time. So why do I never have the correct change, never understand the pretty diagrams instructing me how to use said machines and always forget, and have to go back for, the detergent?

My top tips would be to camp near to the laundry building as you will wear a track back and forth to your van/tent, and have a good watch to check when you last looked to see if washing was finished or dry as someone else will take it out of the machine and you'll lose a sock at the very least! I must have walked a mile before Bernie started.

I was actually entrusted with switching everything off to move the van this morning and apart from finding that my legs are not long enough to keep my foot on the brake whilst turning the driving chair, I think I did a pretty good job. Have to consider carefully how to overcome this problem.

No walking for me today (apart from to the laundry!), but looking forward to Bude tomorrow.

From Bernie:

Cows eating the coast path!

Goats eating the coast path!

If you were planning to walk the coast path at all, you'd better get here quick as there won't be any left soon!

Today's walk. 9.1 miles. Cumulative. 131.1 miles

Close observers of the Itinerary will detect a slight change to the programme! Very windy today; I passed several walkers who had turned back to Boscastle as they felt conditions were too wild; I had no option, John O'Groats was ahead, not behind me! I had decided, however, that Crackington was far enough .....

A group of 6 lads, training for the 10 Tors, raced past me down the hill into Boscastle. They were headed for Bude and probably got there before I stopped for lunch.....

This is the first time we'd been back to Boscastle since the 2004 floods but as you can see, it is looking as beautiful as ever.

Highlight of the Day: met up with Wendy and Richard, our first 'visitors' on the walk! First met them whilst walking Wainwright's Coast-to-Coast in 2003, outside a closed pub - they became known to us as 'the couple from The George'! We've exchanged Christmas cards and occasional messages since: they now live in Tremaine, near Launceston and drove over to meet us - lovely to see you both again and what a pity we forgot to take a photo!

Beer of the Day: 'Castle Gold' from Tintagel Brewery (I didn't know they had one!) at Coombe Barton Inn, Crackington Haven. A good golden bitter.

Wendy and Richard: Thanks for your donation and taking the time to come and visit.
Terry and Pauline: Hope all goes well with the move tomorrow.
Stuart: I told you your team were only trying to make it look exciting!

  1. the last time me and mandy was in boscastle was in 2007 and by then you not have known that it had been flooded if it was not for the photos on display next to the river

  2. You could publish your own 'Pasty and Pint Trail' - I'm sure it'd go down like a pasty and pint!
Love the photos - can almost smell the sea!
